Empowerment for the Poor-Uganda believes in the power of entrepreneurship to create jobs and improve the quality of life for people living in extreme poverty through empowering them with business and entrepreneurship development skills, support them to access networks and capital they need to reach their full potential.
We believe that poverty incapacitates people’s ability to dream and in the end disconnects them from opportunities. Our work is to unlock their potential, stimulate their ability to dream and connect them to opportunities through business and entrepreneurship trainings, mentorship and providing them with spaces to interact and connect with business minded leaders, social innovators, successful entrepreneurs and professionals in order to gain mentorship and technical expertise
We support youth in institutions to enhance graduate outcomes and improve post-graduation success rates by empowering them with 21st-century skills training to prepare them become business leaders at an early age, support workplace exposure, and placement support to final year students at their existing educational institutions to give them opportunity learn effective business skills and build their confidence to become self-sustaining entrepreneurs
Discover phase: This includes empowering youth and women with business fundamentals, financial literacy, and leadership development
Develop phase: This includes advanced business planning, market validation, and initial funding access.
Scale phase: This involves operational support and access to growth capital. Furthermore, youth and women entrepreneurs are still supported with continued training, mentorship and market linkages to scale operations and grow their revenues
Our work feeds into Sustainable Development Goals like1- No poverty, 2-Zero hunger 3- Good health and well-being,4- Quality education,8- Decent work and economic growth 13 –Climate action and 17- Partnership.
Uganda produces approximately 600,000–700,000 new graduates each year from tertiary institutions (universities, colleges, and vocational Institutes). However, the formal employment sector absorbs only 90,000–238,000 graduates annually. And according to the Uganda National Planning Authority, Uganda’s economy generates just around 100,000 new jobs per year, leaving roughly 500,000 graduates unemployed or underemployed annually. Worse still, while vocational institutions provide technical skills, only 13% of youth in Uganda succeed in transforming their expertise into profitable, sustainable enterprises resulting from low innovation and entrepreneurship abilities. Related to this, over 80% of small businesses started by individuals fail before reaching 2 years. There is an urgent need to sharpen the entrepreneurship mindset of many youth to unlock their potential through mentorship matching and entrepreneurship development using digital technology.
We empower vulnerable communities and individuals to reach their full potential by tackling the causes of poverty, hunger and diseases. We restore their confidence and dignity, stimulate their capacity to dream and then connect them to opportunities.
